Irrigation Installation

For an irrigation system to function efficiently for a long time, care needs to be taken while designing it. How and where each component is placed will determine the cost, future maintenance, the ease of making changes in the future if required, and the longevity of the system. A well-designed irrigation system also ensures appropriate coverage and water conservation. A smart design considers how the system will be constructed, attempting to route piping in such a way that trenching will cause the least amount of disruption to the existing landscape.

Installing an irrigation system involves excavating the land. Therefore there needs to be a proper understanding of zones and utility line placements so that none of the lines are damaged in the installation process. Also, the number and placement of sprinkler heads matter to ensure every plant in the landscape receives the right amount of water without causing puddling on the lawn and wetting the hardscapes like pathways and driveways.

Down to Earth Landscape & Irrigation provides full-spectrum irrigation design and installation services starting from understanding the zoning of the landscape and creating a design accordingly to installing the right irrigation system for the landscape. We understand that not every landscape has the same irrigation requirement, and therefore, we do not follow a one-size-fits-all policy. The professionals at Down To Earth install every system in consultation with the client to understand their specific needs.

We also provide well and pump installation services for property owners that desire to utilize natural groundwater on their property instead of city sources.

Questions & Answers

Here are some commonly asked questions about Down To Earth Landscape & Irrigation.

The benefits of installing an irrigation system are as follows:

  • Saves Time and Energy: With an irrigation system, you don’t have to worry about investing time and effort to water the landscape, as the irrigation system will do it automatically. Therefore, even if you are away from the property for a while, you can rest assured that your landscape will be watered.
  • Is Efficient: A well-designed irrigation system will only provide the amount of water required, not more or less. Therefore there will be no wastage of water due to overwatering as it tends to happen with manual irrigation.
  • Saves Money: With an efficient irrigation system, you will not only conserve water but also prevent nutrient and soil loss due to runoff which can be caused by overwatering. Therefore, you will be saving on water bills as well as on fertilizer and topsoil replacements.
  • Provides Balanced and Consistency in Irrigation: A carefully planned irrigation system will water all the plants and the grass in the landscape according to their specific requirements, as in this case, the plants with similar watering requirements will be placed together. This will ensure balanced and consistent irrigation for the entire landscape.

The different types of sprinkler heads are as follows:

  • Fixed Spray Sprinkler Heads: This type gives a constant and tight spray of water in a fixed pattern; the nozzle of the sprinkler head will determine the radius of the spray. This sprinkler head provides a thin stream of water that can get easily blown away; therefore, this type should not be used in windy regions.
  • Rotary Sprinkler Heads: Rotary heads are similar to fixed ones. The only difference is that it provides water in a rotating pattern; therefore, the water delivery for each area is slower. This makes it perfect for landscapes with slow-draining soils.
  • Bubbler Irrigation: This method of irrigation distributes a large amount of water quickly, allowing it to collect in narrow spaces around shrubs and trees, as well as ground cover. Lawns are not watered with bubblers.
  • Popup Sprinkler Heads: As the name suggests, these sprinkler heads pop up from the ground when the system is activated and go back under when the irrigation schedule is complete.
  • Drip Irrigation: Drip irrigation is substantially more efficient for vast landscapes since it delivers water slowly to plant bases. Drip irrigation works effectively for flower beds and crops.

Drip irrigation or micro-irrigation is an irrigation method that slowly applies water to individual plants. The drip irrigation system is fairly easy to set up on your own and requires four simple steps: irrigation trellis layout, hose assembly, tee installation, and emitter and feedline installation. When installing a drip irrigation system, the first thing to do is to place the trellis with a hose. This will tell you how far the hoses need to be. Each hose has an emitter attached to a plastic hose that extends from the main house to the plant.
